The new millennium

Story Of Kitchen Classic Pp 174 Copy _138x 125

In 2003, fitting a 3-oven AGA cooker into the space occupied by a 2-oven model for the previous 80 years was an engineering breakthrough and a major step forward, adding a baking oven for the first time along with the additional capacity. Launched first in gas and then 13-amp electric, 40% of AGA heat-storage cookers sold today have three ovens.

The introduction of the 13-amp electric model in 2004 – complete with standard household plug – changed the AGA family forever. It needs no flue and can be fitted almost anywhere in the kitchen. Nearly half of all AGA range cookers sold today are 13-amp electric models.

2007 saw the launch of AIMS – the AGA Intelligent Management System, which was fitted on to the 13-amp electric AGA. It ensures that the AGA cooker is up to temperature when you need it for cooking, but then going into slumber mode when not required and off in the householder's absence. AIMS can even be fitted retrospectively to earlier 13-amp models. Using AIMS can reduce energy usage and is now also available for selected gas models.

In 2009 the company celebrated the 300th anniversary of its foundry in Coalbrookdale. The site is now a World Heritage Site, recognised as the first place in the world where iron ore was smelted with coke instead of charcoal – the innovation that ignited the Industrial Revolution and literally changed the world.

It was in this year that research was undertaken as part of the tricentenary celebrations to track down every AGA range cooker in the world.

Twenty Ten – today: a period on unparalleled innovation

The summer of 2011 saw perhaps the greatest sea change in the development of the heat-storage AGA cooker – the launch of the AGA Total Control, the first ever fully programmable model with an on/off switch. The first of the next generation of AGA heat-storage cookers, this award-winning model features a simple to use touch-screen panel that determines which part of the cooker is on. Heat can be sent to each oven and each hotplate separately.

The AGA Total Control was further enhanced in May 2012, with the launch of a model that can be controlled remotely via a smartphone, PC, laptop, iPad or tablet. The AGA iTotal Control cooker's three ovens (roasting, baking and simmering) are remotely operated, so you can ensure the cooker is warm and supper will be cooked at exactly the time you need it. Essentially, you can sync your AGA at the touch of a button. And those AGA iTotal Control owners who don’t have a smartphone, tablet or laptop can still take advantage of this technical revolution – simply by sending a text message to the AGA. This model can also be controlled via the web, so even if you have no phone signal you can use a wireless network to ensure the cooker is doing exactly what you want it to.

The new electric AGA Dual Control – launched in the summer of 2013 – is everything you love about the AGA cooker, but with added flexibility and much-reduced running and servicing costs. The AGA Dual Control looks much like a traditional AGA cooker but it features a new low energy setting for the ovens and it can also be switched off completely. What’s more, the two hotplates can be turned on and off independently, meaning you can make a reduction in the overall heat input into the room from the cooker when desired and, in turn, reduce running costs. The boiling plate and simmering plate can be operated at the turn of a switch via the discrete control panel and so are on when you need them and off when you don’t. So, not only does the AGA Dual Control cook using the same principles as a traditional AGA but it can cost up to 50% less to run than a 13-amp electric AGA cooker.

Good things come in big packages and that is especially true when it comes to cooking. That's why the autumn of 2012 saw the launch of the biggest ever model – an AGA Total Control cooker with five ovens. The addition of 5-oven models means there truly is an AGA cooker for everyone and the 5-oven AGA Total Control and AGA Dual Control completed a key phase in the development of the electrification of the AGA collection. The new model features a roasting oven, baking oven, warming oven, simmering oven and slow cooking oven, ensuring unrivalled levels of flexibility.
